Reds are making this sweep stuff a habit

It was the Cincinnati Reds first 6-0 homestand since 1995. They've now won 7 in a row at Great American Ball Park, a stadium record. Adam Dunn hit another towering home run to the Sun Deck in right field; which was his 4th straight game and 10th round-tripper on the season (248 over the course of his career).

Cliff Lee vs. Edison Volquez certainly lived up to the billing. Volquez is now baseball's leader in ERA with a sparkling 1.33 mark and a 7-1 record to go with. Obviously at this point he is the ace of the staff whether or not people like Aaron Harang's workhorse mantra.

And suddenly this team heads out on a west coast swing that begins today; with all the ingriedients to make this season a worthwhile one. That also will hinge on getting through the 4 and 5 starters who have not pitched well this season (Arroyo and Belisle). They historically have not played well on the west coast. If they can get through this trip; and somehow keep the winning streak going, my goatee will get much longer and this season will grow in excitement.

We're Going to Shea! We're Going to Shea! Woooooo

We were supposed to head out east next weekend, meet up with our pal and head to Yankee stadium. I've said since before this season started that I was going to: 1) see Yankee Stadium one last time before it falls to the ground; and 2) I had a dying quest to get to Shea Stadium. We won't be getting to go to Yankee Stadium on Memorial day weekend; our trip was cancelled. But we've topped it.

We're headed to New York June 20th to 24th to see our REDS play the Yankees at Yankee Stadium, and then to top it off we'll see the Mets play at Shea Stadium on monday the 24th. We have wanted to go to Shea Stadium since we were a little boy,
when Darryl Strawberry tore up the right field bleachers with blasts. All the history, all the great games. The orange seats. Queens. Flushing. It's too much for us.

Hopefully Jay Bruce is up with the big league Reds by then and holding it down in center for them at Yankee Stadium.

Throwing it around

It's a great sports day this sunday, as we tried to get to the ballpark but couldn't find anyone to go with us. We won't hold it against them as not everyone gets mondays off like we do. It's going to be an awesome day, we just hope that it seems to last as long as a work week day does! Enjoy the bloggages:

-Today is the 3rd time in baseball history that the two league leaders in ERA faced off, in Cliff Lee vs. Edison Volquez. And we could have seen it! [Reds Insider]
-Diamond Back fans would like to see Carlos Quentin back in left field now instead of Eric Byrnes [Arizona Sports Hub]
-Give Jay Bruce a nickname, win a book. We hope our nomination of "The Deal" not only wins but generally holds true for Bruce. [The Bus Leagues]
-In Lance Berkman are we looking at a future Hall of Famer? [Bleacher Report]
-Hot Dogs! Dodger Stadium! Prices! [Farther off the Wall]
-Big win at Shea yesterday for the Mets. [Mets Prospectus]

Manny Ramirez really is worth the price of admission

For most guys I'd be saying how do you even dream something like this up? I mean, he makes a running catch in a big spot and somehow in his dead run to the wall he spots a Red Sox fan in the Camden Yards outfield and gives a high five.

With Manny Ramirez, I'm not even surprised. It would seem that Manny, albeit funny and a guy who marches to the beat of his own drummer; is about at the mentality level of a really smart golden retriever. And there's nothing wrong with that. Ramirez is fun to watch, he always has been. I loved him when he was an Indian.

Does anyone else remember my personal all-time favorite Manny moment when he was the fucking cut off man for Johnny Damon's outfield throw? (Watch around the :57 mark in this video to see it!)

What can I say? Adam Dunn is a saturday night type of guy

Adam Dunn is a saturday night hero, believe me; I've heard the stories. What is it about hitting walk-off bombs against the Cleveland Indians in Cincinnati? For the third year in a row, Dunn has done just that.

You could see it in the Reds' players faces. Their expressions said 'Yay! Thank you Dunner! We can go get drunk now!'. And to be honest, they deserve it. The win was the Reds 5th in a row, all coming on this homestand.

It was another majestic blast for Dunn. Masa Kobayashi showed us all how to take your ERA from under 2 to over 3 in one pitch. The ball, as usual; nearly left the entire stadium. The blast came after Dunn unsucessfully tried to bunt the runners on first and second over.

It was a really great scene, as not many ballgames are played starting during the 3:00 hour at Great American Ballpark. It was nice for a change for a ballgame to end around dinner time, just in time for the Reds to hit up a tavern in town and be ready for tomorrow's 1:00 start. After the game Dunn spoke to a national audience as FOX's Kevin Kennedy and Jeanne Zelasko observed. It was storybook.

The home run was the 247th of Adam Dunn's career, the 7th of walk-off variety, and his third straight game taking one long.

Remember when Upton broke up Johnny Cueto's No-No?

And you've got to love the lone comment on the video:

i went to school with this dude (Upton), kid is a freak of nature, he can ball too he can jump high as hell he dunks like its nothing, all he did in high school in lifting class was use rubber bands to lift its nuts

Quick note on my fantasy team

Tonight my fantasy baseball team began the night with a home run from Brandon Phillips, and a home run from Adam Dunn. A nice start.

Since that moment, they're 0 for 13 and now just 2 for 15 on the night (.133).

For the season they're hitting .236 now. This is a fantasy baseball team we're talking about here. To think I could have almost lined up any team in baseball's realm and hit better than a team of perennial All-Stars is managing. Fuck fantasy baseball. Fuck Horses!

King Dusty quotable. Very quotable

"He [Janish] is a true shortstop, but Jerry's doing a great job offensively and we've been having trouble offensively," Baker said. "You've got to have some offense to replace a key offensive guy."
-Dusty Baker, 5/15/08 while Corey Patterson raises his OBP to a whopping .276 and Jay Bruce's .984 OPS sits in Louisville

Josh Hamilton: Slugging the Rangers back to respectability

Tonight Josh Hamilton is 2 for 2 including his 9th home run of the season, and he's already nearly equaled his RBI total from last year (45 so far this year, he had 47 last season). He's also hitting .302 on the campaign as of this second.

This will always be one of the best tales in baseball history, but quietly the Rangers aren't an embarrasment anymore. Hamilton has quietly mixed in as a huge force as the Rangers primary 3-hole hitter. They're 20-22 on the season, and are looking to be just a game under .500 if they can hang onto victory tonight.

So how will this run for Hamilton and the Rangers end? We can only sit back and imagine what might ahve been if the Reds would have found a way to have kept Hamilton; even if it meant not acquiring Edison Volquez. Hamilton is a player that the Reds could have plugged into centerfield and built around for the next decade. Of course, they did not forsee Hamilton being this durable and depenable; which is another reason we'll always hate former Reds GM Wayne Krivsky.

It's still nice to see Hamilton do what he's doing. We'll always have a soft spot in our hearts for him, because he treated not only us but everyone we saw him come in contact with with the utmost respect. Keep it going Natural.

Update: Wouldn't you know that Hamilton would do something special since we posted. Hamilton has hit a 3 run homer for his 2nd of the game, now totaling 48 RBI on the season, topping last seasons total. He has done better than an RBI per game, now with 48 in just 43 games played.

Take a bow Jason Werth, you'll never have another game like this

Jason Werth has got to be one of our all time favorite players. To heckle and fuck with. But tonight, he's made us look like an ass.

Werth has batted three times tonight against the Toronto Blue Jays, and three times Werth has homered. He's hit two bombs backside to right field (a grand slam and a three run homer); and a solo jack just to add to the carnage. If you tally all that up correctly, he's got 8 RBI's in a game currently in the 6th inning.

And thus goes to show you in baseball, the sun can truly shine on any dog's ass on a given day. You don't have to be a superstar to do amazing things. Adam Dunn has never hit 3 home runs in a game, but this Punch and Judy specialist Werth has now added it to his resume.

And what about his mom? We can't believe she gave birth to J. Werth. Last time we saw a face like his, there was sores on it from the jockey hitting it.

Throwing it around

Happy friday night. Interleague play kicks off tonight in full swing. We've already had a homer happy night with Jason Werth and Alfonso Soriano dropping 2 bombs, and Adam Dunn and Brandon Phillips each making it hurt against Jeremy Sowers. Here's some baseball worthy reading for the day:

And you thought Mike Mussina was too old

We thought that we needed to point out that at the moment Mike Mussina is 6-3 with an ERA under 4. Mussina has been as much of an ace as any pitcher in pinstripes this season, and has been pitching with a season-long Billy Chappel like rejuvance.

We admit, we thought Mussina was done during most of last season and we had him left for dead for 2008. He hasn't walked the plank yet, and they're even talking about the possibility of Mussina winning 20 games for the Yankees this season. We think that might be pushing it a bit too far, but honestly. If we'd have bet you that Mussina was going to win 15-18 games this season and be the Yankees most consistent pitcher; you would have told us we were fucking crazy and asked us to double the bet.

Where would the Yankees be right now without Mussina? Several more games behind the Tampa Bay Rays, that's where.

How long must we wait for #600, Junior?

Every once in a while we still see that glimpse of Ken Griffey Jr. that could hit lazers all over the ball park; run like a gazelle and basically do anything possible of being done on a baseball field and make it look so smooth and pretty.

If you were like me you took it for granted because you were younger and you thought that Junior would be 25 years old forever. You thought you'd be young forever too.

Griffey got old on us quickly. All those nights that we'd lay in our bed late at night listening to AM radio to hear the out of town scores (playing in Seattle he'd play in many a game that ran after midnight eastern time) and see if Griff hit another one. And on so many nights he made all his young fans obliged and indeed left the yard.

We've been waiting now for nearly 70 at-bats since his last homer. Give us #598 Junior. I have my doubts about the world seeing #700 but without a doubt this is a thrill to any baseball fan that grew up during the 90's. This may be the last great milestone that the Micheal Jordan in cleats reaches.

We just have to wait.

The Battle of Ohio commences tonight

Tonight the Battle of Ohio opens up with the Indians rolling 4 hours up I-71 and into Cincinnati to take on the Reds. Usually when the Reds win 3 in a row as they have achieved recently, they earn the title 'Surging Reds'. I won't do that. Cincinnati was opportunistic in beating the Marlins the past three games, but they did it with some luck; they haven't looked dominating like the Indians have while catapaulting back into first place.

The main reason the Indians look dominant is their pitching. They had a stretch where three straight starters had shut out the other team in their appearance (Carmona, Lee, Sabathia). They're still not really hitting like they should but this should make for an entertaining series. The Reds always seem to give a heavier loaded Indians team fits. Ken Griffey Jr. can still find the humor in not hitting, thank goodness.

We wish we were going to be on-hand in this one
as we were last season, but we have to work 16 hours tomorrow. We'll be watching and commentating we assure you.
In the end, we see the Reds taking 2 of 3 here at home to stifle the Indians recent hot play a bit. The Reds have no business winning this series, but they'll find a way. Dunn homers once as does Griffey in the 3 game set.

Janish a hero like Moonlight Graham

[Reds Insider]

Paul Janish was brought up to play shortstop with the injury to Jeff Keppinger, and last night he got the storybook hit to win the game in his 2nd career at bat. Wouldn't you know it?
By the way, GM Walt Jocketty spoke about Jay Bruce being brought up here in the near future.
Dunn hit number 245, the Reds won their third in a row over the Marlins, and that was that. I'm going running.

Throwing it around

We're watching the Cavs choke away a series and the Reds try and win their 3rd game in a row over the Marlins. It's hump day for sure here and we're looking forward to a good baseball weekend that opens up interleague play and features the battle of Ohio series. Here's some stuff we choose to link today:

Stargate, Jay Bruce log

We feel it's our duty to tell you what kind of tear that Jay Bruce is on right now. Today in AAA Louisville (don't worry about the score), Bruce went 3 for 3 with a home run, a triple, and a double; also 2 walks. Bruce raised his average to .366 on the season. Bruce is also hitting .611 over his last ten games.

He clearly can't make anymore of a push to get to the big leagues. Corey Patterson of the Reds has been on a tear of his own with 7 hits in the last 3 ballgames and 2 stolen bases (oh boy) to raise his average to .232 for the season. And this is what is blocking the man who will certainly save Cincinnati baseball?

Bruce can't get here soon enough for us.

Diamond Hoggers Campaign to get Justin Upton to the 2008 All Star Game!

VOTE for Justin Upton for the 2008 All-Star Game in New York

Justin Upton could be the next great player of this generation, and his dream has always been to play in the House that Ruth Built; but if he isn't voted to play in the 2008 All-Star Game in the Bronx, he won't be able to do it before Yankee Stadium is torn down.

We are going to try and sway this thing a bit, with your help of course. We're going to see if we can get Upton an extra 10,000 votes. That's 100 nights of 100 votes per night. Or 50 nights of 200 votes. We can do that, easily. We can do that while watching our nightly television. But we need your help! So go to the ballot, and vote for this kid.

We figure if we can get 100 fans to pour in an extra 1,000 votes each--we can do this thing. We'll contribute 10,000 on our own as our promise. We'll even update you on our honest and approximate count!

He's got all the tools, let him showcase them against the best in baseball at the most famous venue in baseball history. You won't be sorry.

The General Feeling I get about Adam Dunn

He's hitting .203 as I write this. He's tallied 6 home runs and 19 RBI. After the season didn't start how he expected it to, he's frustrated and beyond the stage of pressing and into the stage of no longer caring.

He's been my favorite player and probably athlete of all-time for what seems like a lifetime. Nothing will ever change that. However, I see a change in this player I've studied so closely over the past 8 seasons.

Adam Dunn; to me, looks like a player who generally is ready to move on. He looks like he's had it with the fans making him the scapegoat (right or wrong), and he's had it with the losing right on the border of the Ohio River.

While I think he's lost the support of a high percentage of the fans around Cincinnati (and my how things have changed, I remember people comparing him to Teddy Ballgame in 2002 when he hit .300 through the All-Star break), Dunn has been an easy target because he's been a fixture on a ballclub that has done nothing consistently but lose since his tenure began here. So who's left to blame? He's played under 2 different owners, four managers, four general managers. A plethora of different teammates ran in and out. His best friend was traded.

Dunn has just seen things run their course and come to a head. I know when this season started he really believed everything was going to come together. He thought he was going to be part of a winning team and have a career changing season in route to earning a long-term contract. I think he genuinely expected a culmination at this fork in the road in his career. It hasn't happened and chances are slim that it does happen that way now.

So mentally Dunn is shrugging his shoulders. He just reads to me as a guy who has said 'I've given what I believe to be my best to make things work here. I go out everyday and play hard. I do what I can do and nothing changes. Whatever happens, happens.'

There's been times before when I thought that maybe the Reds would part with Adam Dunn, but for the first time ever I think that both sides might just want to seperate. The organizaton, the player, and the fans all want the same thing here. It's a weird feeling. This isn't Dunn's team anymore, although it's no one's team; somehow things all went wrong here. It is hard to watch but at the same time when one door closes another opens. Dunn's term ending here in Cincinnati will be one of the hardest things I've ever came to grips with as a fan. The only thing giving it a little silver lining will be Jay Bruce's arrival as the patron baseball saint to save Cincinnati. Like when Old Yeller died but had a son who was just as good as the real Old Yeller.

The writing is on the wall in this one. It's a matter of time until Adam Dunn has a new home, and you watch: when he does, he will go on a sudden and unexplainable tear.

If you know this quote, maybe you can understand it's place in this post. It just fits.

Sorry boys. All the stitches in the world cant sew me together again.

Edison Volquez goes for the Reds tonight

Can Volquez take his league leading ERA under 1 tonight? Can he give the Reds two wins in a row? In a few short hours all these questions will be answered. We'll be back to talk about it later.

Update: The Reds won the game 5 to 3, with Volquez earning another victory. Joey Votto hit his 8th home run of the season, but the loss was costly because Jeff Keppinger fractured his patella fouling a ball off of it and he'll most likely miss the rest of the season.

Most likely Paul Janish (.263 career hitter in the minors) will be brought up from AAA Louisville to play shortstop.
